My deepest sympathies go to Andy’s family. I was on staff with UCCF at the time when Andy was team leader in Scotland. He was someone who evidently loved Jesus and put all he encountered at ease. He has left such an imprint on Scotland with his faithful witness and example of how to lead well.

Andy was my boss at SU Scotland, as you know, Alyson, and I couldn't have asked for a better one. His door was always open. You didn't have to stand on ceremony with Andy. He wasn't a micro-manager either - he listened to ideas and gave you free reign to run with them. It was at his instigation that Schools Prayer Network was welcomed into SU Scotland, and a Prayer Coordinator appointed to manage it. Turning into Pray for Schools Scotland, Andy was the initiator behind Pray Any Way and Pray Together for primary children which ran for many years. His legacy lives on in the %age of schools prayed for across Scotland, and in the growth of SU Scotland too. When Andy started with SU, the staff team was a quarter of what it is now! His vision was growth. His heart was always for Scripture, for God - but not always evident in some - for people, and particularly young people. My memory is of him standing listening to a young member of staff: more often listening than talking. That was Andy. He brought a joy to the office with his sense of humour too. I was blessed to have known him, we all were, and as your heart breaks today, be grateful that you didn't witness him go into decline - he left us as he always was: fit, active and ready for the Lord's call. Unexpectedly, it was to be with his Maker. May the Lord strengthen, bless you, guide you and keep you in the days to come. God bless, Elizabeth McDowall

I share with hundreds the shock and sadness hearing of Andrew's sudden passing. We are assured he is with Jesus, but it is so hard for his precious family to lose him without warning. I knew him from primary 3, all through school and university. I thank God with all my heart for his faithfulness in prayer as I was one of many who came to know Jesus as a result. My sincere condolences to Alyson, Karen, Fiona and her family. Janice.

Andy Bathgate surely was a "man after God's own heart": a true shepherd who humbly led , over many years, countless numbers of children and young people in paths of righteousness by encouraging them to read God's Word and seek daily His Will and plan for their lives. He valued each one. He was a fine example to all of us who had the privilege to know him. What a legacy he leaves behind and how much he will be missed . We pray for you, dear Alyson ,and the family that The Comforter will be very near and very real to each one of you at this sad time of loss. May you cling tightly to the promise of the Hope we have as believers in Jesus. Maranatha!! Willie & Isabel

Dearest beautiful family so sorry for this loss; I see Andy's big smile here and it visually arrives with solid memories of his warmth, genuine love for the person and his pragmatic listening ear which cared. What a special person he was to know and celebrate. With love and prayers for you each at this time.

My last encounter with Andy was a hug when he visited Christ Church, Craigentinny with the Edinburgh City Mission folk to update us on the way ahead. You could rely on Andy always to be gracious and have a word from the Lord.

A gentleman who was a towering figure in Scottish evangelicalism and beyond for the last 50 years. Beyond narrow tribalism’. A unifier with a great vision. He shall be missed but we shall meet again whdn all things are made new. The Catechism says, ‘ The souls of believers are at their death made perfect in holiness and do immediately pass into glory. Their bodies, being still united to Christ, do rest in the grave until the resurrection. We have this hope.

We knew Andy in the 80s through our friendship with Julia in Dundee. He spoke at our wee church in South Tay street on several occasions, and had the loveliest Scottish voice, a gentleness, warmth and good humour that made him great company - a very ‘Bathgate’ thing!’ Much love to all the family.

Andy will live long in our memories as one of the finest christian men we ever knew. I had the priviledge of sharing a house with him as students and meeting up for a reunion just a few years back and he hadn't changed; a credit to his Lord and the faith. Sincerest condolances to the family.

Andy was one of the finest Christians I ever met. I used to count books in the Free Church College in the 1990's and Andy's office used to be in a dusty attic room. We used to have great chats and I was always struck by Andy's humility and godliness. We never saw each other very often but his name used to come up in so many Christian circles. He was a humble, gentle giant in the Christian world and he will be hugely missed. So sorry for your loss as a family.

Attending a funeral FAQs
What should I wear?
We normally associate wearing black with going to a funeral. But it is increasingly typical for families to express a preferred dress code. Our advice is to look out for information from the family in a notice published either in newspapers, online or in the funeral director window to advise you of their preference.
How long does a service last?
Typically a service in most churches or crematoria lasts around 20-30 minutes. A formal mass may take a little longer and we would expect this to be nearer an hour. Finally, burials can vary in length as they are weather dependent.
Where should I sit?
Family and close friends typically reserve the first couple of rows in a service. We recommend sitting nearer the front than the back of a service space in order to support the family and enabling late arrivals to discreetly fill back rows.
Where should I send flowers?
Often a family will express a preference for flowers - or charity donations in lieu of flowers. We recommend you keep an eye on notices posted in newspapers, or online or in the funeral director window so you are able to follow their wishes.
