Just to echo Colin's message below. It was great to share time with Andy in the Czech Republic with the Boroughmuir guys and remember his older brother David. His love for his family was so obviously important to him in our discussions. Condolences to his family and friends.

I caught up with Andy again after last being teammates in the Boroughmuir School Rugby team in 1982-83 when his brother David, sadly also passed away last year, was a good friend and had arranged annual poker games with a few other school chums. So this year Andy joined our game which I hosted in the Czech Republic. We toured Vienna and visited a local vineyard where Andy showed off his great agricultural knowledge which was greatly appreciated by our host and my friend Tomas. Andy also really enjoyed the tour around Znojmo which it turns out was led by a local lass who mentioned she was going to Aberdeen Uni and as a alma mater of this distinguished study place he passed on many useful pieces of advice. For me it was a great occasion to share time with friends from yesteryear and Andy's input showed me what a great guy he was. I was shattered to hear about his passing so soon and far far too early however he will join David and look down on us together ,brothers in arms. My condolences to his family, brother and parents.

Myself and my brother Martin were very deeply saddened to hear the news of Andys death. Sometimes in this life if your lucky you get to meet great people perhaps by chance and in Andrews case we were very very lucky. We have lost a great friend who we met on a fishing trip to South Uist some years ago, a guy we all loved to spend time with and get to know both here in Ireland and on his home turf Scotland.Throughout our many fishing trips and adventureshe was always game to go out no matter what the weather threw at us and it was always a pleasure to have him there and to be around him. Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife and young children at this difficult time and in the many conversations with me about them over the years it was very obvious the affection and love he had for them all . We will all miss you but we will always carry your memory in our hearts through the fun, laughter and the great times we had together as friends/anglers and will never forget you on future fishing trips. We will always miss you big man.

Attending a funeral FAQs

View all FAQs >

What should I wear?

We normally associate wearing black with going to a funeral. But it is increasingly typical for families to express a preferred dress code. Our advice is to look out for information from the family in a notice published either in newspapers, online or in the funeral director window to advise you of their preference.

How long does a service last?

Typically a service in most churches or crematoria lasts around 20-30 minutes. A formal mass may take a little longer and we would expect this to be nearer an hour. Finally, burials can vary in length as they are weather dependent.

Where should I sit?

Family and close friends typically reserve the first couple of rows in a service. We recommend sitting nearer the front than the back of a service space in order to support the family and enabling late arrivals to discreetly fill back rows.

Where should I send flowers?

Often a family will express a preference for flowers - or charity donations in lieu of flowers. We recommend you keep an eye on notices posted in newspapers, or online or in the funeral director window so you are able to follow their wishes.
